Here's how the two memberships stack for you as an IFT/AFT member:

IFT (state level) gets you local contract bargaining support and Illinois-specific programs. For example, the Special Education Teacher Tuition Waiver and IFT scholarships (Megel, Porter) only apply to Illinois educators.
AFT (national level) layers on the AFT+ program which includes: travel, insurance, and shopping discounts coordinated with Union Privilege plus national resources like Share My Lesson and the AFT Robert G. Porter Scholars program.
Together, dues to one flow through to the other automatically. IFT membership includes AFT membership, so you're not paying twice or joining separately. You get a local union's voice, backed by 103,000 Illinois members, backed by 1.8 million members nationally (and 10 million more through the AFL-CIO), which is a lot of leverage when it comes to bargaining, legislation, and legal protection.
